Petzl is a French manufacturer of climbing gear and headlamps based in Crolles, France. Petzl is an acronym for “P ch tz l,” which means “rock” in the local dialect of Occitan language. The company was founded by two brothers, Claude and Jean Petzl, in 1975 as a small family business that manufactured caving equipment such as ropes and pulleys. In the early 1980s, to respond to increased interest from climbers in their products, they shifted their focus to manufacturing equipment for rock-climbing activities.
